Frequenty Asked Questions
Got questions? We've got cool answers.
S&B Evaps knows that choosing the right evaporative cooler or maintaining it can raise questions. We've compiled the most common inquiries from our customers to help you make informed, confident decisions.
From how our systems work to where they work best, this section gives you quick, straightforward answers so you can focus on what matters: staying cool.
Maintenance & Operation
How do I maintain?
For optimal performance, regularly check that the evaporative media pads are clean and free of debris before operating your S&B cooler. For long-term storage or winterizing, completely drain the water reservoir and empty the water circuit. Open the water flow valve fully and make sure the unit is dry before storing. Use a cover to prevent pests from entering the unit during storage.
Can the fan and pump operate separately?
Yes, the fan and pump can operate independently. Your S&B evaporative cooler can function as a fan by turning off the water pump, circulating air without cooling. You can also switch the water pump on to saturate the cooling media before activating the fan, which maximizes cooling when used as an evaporative cooler.
What happens if the cooler runs out of water?
If the water runs out, the automatic shut-off feature will stop the pump to protect the system. Turn the pump switch to "OFF" as soon as you notice the water level is low to prevent unnecessary strain on the cooler.
Do I need to keep my hose connected?
No, the cooler comes with a built-in water reservoir that allows for standalone operation. The cooler can run for up to 10 hours on a full tank of water, depending on ambient conditions. A continuous hose connection is not necessary.
Do I need a special power outlet?
The Small and Medium models can be used with a standard household 120V NEMA 5-15A outlet.
The Large model requires a 120V NEMA 5-20A outlet.
If you're unsure about your outlets, consult a certified electrician for guidance.
Performance & Usage
Can the Evap be used outside?
Yes, it works effectively outdoors, delivering a refreshing breeze in open spaces. It performs best in confined open areas but can still cool outdoor environments significantly.
Does it work in humid environments?
S&B Evap coolers will provide a modest temperature reduction in environments with up to 85% relative humidity, but they perform best in hot, dry climates.
In more humid areas, the cooling effect is less noticeable because evaporation is less efficient. Even in these conditions, the coolers can still make the environment more comfortable by increasing airflow.
What's the temperature difference?
In low-humidity conditions, the temperature reduction can be as much as 30°F. This provides significant cooling that makes even the hottest environments more comfortable.
Will my space feel humid?
The cooling process will typically increase relative humidity by about 3-5%, depending on environmental conditions. This small increase is unnoticeable, especially in well-ventilated areas.
Does the cooler create mist?
No, S&B Evaps do not produce mist or water droplets. If you notice droplets, the water flow valve is likely too open. Adjust the valve to reduce water flow until no more droplets are present.
Media & Components
How long does the media last?
With proper maintenance, the evaporative media lasts up to 3 years. Replacement pads or extra sets can be purchased from our store to keep your unit in top condition.
Warranty & Support
What is the warranty?
S&B evaporative coolers are built from durable components, but some parts may wear out faster than others. We offer a 1-year warranty on the water pump, a 3-year warranty on all electrical and electronic components, and a lifetime warranty on the plastic housing parts.
